James K. Gray’1931 DSC

1981 Distinguished Service Citation

Physician – Health Officer

A native son of Wisconsin, you realized a boyhood ambition to become a doctor through training provided by Beloit and the state university’s medical school. Enlistment in Beloit’s celebrated Company L of the National Guard as an undergraduate formed the foundation upon which you were to build a significant career in military medicine over two decades in the U.S., Guam, Japan and North Korea. Upon retiring as an Air Force colonel in 1963, you were named Douglas County (Oregon) health officer and served with distinction until your second retirement two years ago. Your far-sighted direction of the county health department and your dedicated efforts on numerous state and national professional boards, councils, and committees – including the presidency of Oregon’s Health Officers Association and its Public Health Association – earned you the state’s Outstanding Leadership Award in 1972. You also have been deeply involved in activity relating to prison health and the examination and licensing of sanitarians. It is with great pleasure that Beloit College awards you this Citation as you and your classmates return to the campus for your 50th Reunion.
