Vernon E. Keye’1932 DSC

Active professionally as a member of leading associations, speaker and advisor, you are a founder of the Mental Health Section of the American College Health Association.

1972 Distinguished Service Citation

Your exemplary career in social work covers the 40 years since your graduation from Beloit. After initial experience in the psychiatric department of the Cook County (Illinois) Juvenile Court, you went to Great Lakes Naval Training Station in 1941 to develop its neuropsychiatric unit as chief social worker. Your outstanding performance prompted Wayne State University to invite you to establish a veteran’s counseling service there in 1945. Two years later, as the need for psychiatric assistance became evident, you were appointed to start a mental health clinic in the Student Health Service. Now rated among the country’s five top college mental health facilities, the clinic you direct has 11 members serving as counselors and therapists to students with emotional problems and as consultants to the faculty and administration. Active professionally as a member of leading associations, speaker and advisor, you are a founder of the Mental Health Section of the American College Health Association and a past president of the Metro-Detroit and Michigan College Health associations. In recognition of this notable leadership record in a most worthy professional field, your Alma Mater hopes to convey its appreciation by presenting you this Distinguished Service Citation on the occasion of your Fortieth Class Reunion.
