Leader in Dentistry – Educator
The influence of the late Carl Welty, whom you regard as “a man of great vigor whose enthusiasm for teaching permeated classroom and laboratory,” is mirrored in your own exemplary career. A Marquette School of Dentistry graduate, you established a school for dental practitioners in Guam, directed major research facilities, and headed a national center’s unit during a 22-year career in the Navy. Affiliated with the University of Wisconsin at Los Angeles since 1962, you were co-founder of its dental school, chairman of both operative and restorative dentistry, and director of clinics. The high regard graduating seniors hold for you is evidenced by your selection on six occasions as recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award. Publisher of more than 70 professional articles, member of noted journal editorial-review boards, and consultant to national-government agencies, you continue to help improve the quality of life through your efforts as a researcher, teacher, developer of a clinic for care of the underprivileged, and leader in programs for disabled children. Beloit College recognizes your humanistic service and demonstrated commitment to higher education by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation on the occasion of your 50th Class Reunion.
