Barbara Brown Zikmund’61 DSC

Described as “youthful foremother and experienced sister to a new generation of women in ministry.”

1986 Distinguished Service Citation

A deep commitment to Christian ministry – irrevocably confirmed during undergraduate years here – has shaped all aspects of your illustrious career. Ordained into the United Church of Christ in 1964, you have won recognition as dean of faculty and church history professor at Pacific School of Religion, as a theologian, and as a women’s movement leader. Described as “youthful foremother and experienced sister to a new generation of women in ministry,” you have earned a special place in their hearts by listening to and pleading their cause before the churches. You have also registered two major “firsts” for women – as a Chicago Theological Seminary faculty member and currently as president of the Association of Theological Schools. Conscious of living in a time of change, you have encouraged the recognition of the “hidden” histories of diverse racial and ethnic groups within the church and served last summer as a World Council of Churches commissioner at the Programme on Theological Education in Ghana. Beloit College, of which you are a past Alumni Trustee, acknowledges your many outstanding achievements by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation as your class gathers again to celebrate its 25th Reunion.
