William C. Putnam’65 DSC
1985 Distinguished Service Citation
You acknowledge the role Beloit College played in your development as a successful businessman and prominent citizen by citing the opportunities it offered for a well-rounded liberal arts education and the experience in dealing with others through extracurricular activity. Nevertheless, you are a self made man. You nurtured the knowledge and skills garnered as an economics major here to rise to the presidency of a company which operates 12 retail building-materials and home-improvement stores and engages in residential construction, and also to become the owner/officer of other firms involved in wholesale supplies, real estate and land development. A national home-industry leader, president-elect of the Missouri Southern State College Board of Regents, and member of the Young Presidents’ Organization, you have been named one of the Outstanding Young Men in America and as a US Jaycees Top 20 Sparkplug. You still make time to be a Boy Scout council commissioner, swim conference official, United Way volunteer, and church lay reader and teacher. Your Alma Mater takes pride in recognizing your dynamic, creative and effective business and civic leadership by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation.
