A. Lanier Gordon, Jr.’66 DSC

In 1992, you and your family were honored by Wisconsin Public Television for your work with Meals on Wheels.

1996 Distinguished Service Citation

Your commitment to service to others is evident in the path you have taken professionally and in the time you dedicate to volunteer service. You describe your Beloit College mentors Alf Harrer, Bill Knapton and Dan Schroeder as “organized, concerned for all persons, treat everyone with kindness, always available, patient, soft-spoken and open.” Many would describe you in those same words and more. Professionally, you began with service to the Peace Corps in Venezuela as an instructor of physical education and coach to the state teams – even preparing the state basketball team for the Olympic Games. Upon your return to Beloit, you began work as an engineer at Beloit Corporation. Your success was great there and you were issued a U.S. patent for a suction press roll on wet-press water removal. Yet in 1979 you chose to change direction and serve employees as a personnel specialist, where you served until 1986 when you moved to your present position in human resources at Taylor Company. And as if that schedule and raising a family were not enough, your contributions to the Beloit Community are innumerable.

Your dedication particularly to the area of minority youth and sports have been widely acclaimed. You helped establish a Beloit Corporation Minority Scholarship Program, initiated the INROADS program for the city, coach youth basketball and girls softball, and serve as the treasurer of the Black Male Role Model Group. In 1992, you and your family were honored by Wisconsin Public Television for your work with Meals on Wheels.

It is with pride that this College acknowledges your significant accomplishments by presenting you this Distinguished Service Citation on the anniversary of your Class’s 30th reunion.
