Donald P. Carson’71 DSC
1996 Distinguished Service Citation
A music major at Beloit in the late 60s turned senior banking executive in the 90s, you once said, “It may seem like a stretch to go from being a music major to working in international finance, but that wasn’t the case at Beloit. It never occurred to me that I couldn’t do any of these things. Beloit gives a confidence to its students…” Your accomplishments in both finance and music are a true testament to the opportunities you seized from your liberal arts education. Since leaving Beloit you received a master’s degree in international management from the prestigious American Graduate School of International Management and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. In 1977 you joined Wachovia Corporation, where you now serve as executive officer of Wachovia Corporate Services, executive vice president of the Wachovia Bank of Georgia, president and chief executive officer of Wachovia International Capitol Corporation, Wachovia Capital Markets, Inc., Wachovia Leasing Corporation and Wachovia International Banking Corporation.
In addition you serve as the vice president of the Bankers Association for Corporate Finance. Your commitments to music have been best expressed in your ongoing involvement with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus. A member of the Orchestra Board of Trustees, you also serve as a member of the finance, nominating and governance committees. You have performed regularly with the Chorus, recently during the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games in Atlanta. You have also recorded with the Chorus for Telarc Records. Outside of Atlanta, you continue to generously support your alma mater by serving as a member of the Board of Trustees, as a member of the Sesquicentennial Campaign Committee and as a Class of 1971 class agent since 1993. Each of the three past falls have found you sharing your musical skills during the Reunion Jazz Concert.
It is with a great deal of pride that the college honors you by presenting this Distinguished Service Citation on the anniversary of your 25th college reunion.
