What is Cognitive Science?

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of the mind and thought. It brings together ideas from psychology, philosophy, computer science, neuroscience, biology, linguistics, and dynamical systems to explore how thinking happens, what kinds of beings have minds, and how minds interact with bodies and technology. Students learn how to ask big questions about perception, memory, reasoning, consciousness, and artificial intelligence.

The field prepares students for a wide variety of pathways in technology, research, design, human services, and graduate study. If you are curious about how the mind works or how humans and technologies shape each other, cognitive science offers exciting ways to explore those questions.

Why study Cognitive Science?

Cognitive science gives students a toolkit for understanding thought, behavior, and intelligent systems. You will learn how scientists study the mind, how philosophers analyze consciousness, how computer scientists model reasoning, and how social scientists examine the ways technology affects communities. This combination of critical thinking, computational modeling, and social insight prepares students for work in fields that require both analytical precision and human-centered understanding.

The major is flexible so that students shape the degree around their interests. Whether you are fascinated by artificial intelligence, human decision making, ethics, brain processes, or the future of human-machine relationships, cognitive science gives you a strong foundation to explore these puzzles.

Why study Cognitive Science at Beloit College?

Beloit College offers unique courses that examine the mind through both scientific and humanistic lenses. Students might explore the cultural history of artificial intelligence, study human-machine interfaces, or debate the ethical implications of technologies that challenge traditional ideas about bodies, abilities, and identity. Faculty teach from multiple disciplinary perspectives and help students connect theory to real social issues.

Students build depth through interdisciplinary, clustered courses on human nature, computation, and mind, while gaining breadth across psychology, philosophy, computer science, and the natural sciences. Beloit College’s small classes, close mentorship, and emphasis on undergraduate research allow students to investigate questions that matter to them. Cognitive Science curriculum

Cognitive science students at Beloit College explore mental processes, brain-behavior relationships, computation, logic, and ethical reflection. Coursework spans core foundations and electives across psychology, philosophy, and computer science, culminating in capstone work that synthesizes these threads.

Cognitive Science Major (11.5 or 12 Units)

Six core courses: Cognitive Science 101, 205; Philosophy 110 or 115; Philosophy/Cognitive Science 241; Psychology 100; and Psychology/Cognitive Science 240.
One unit chosen from the following language-related courses: Writing 215; Education and Youth Studies 246 (when it is 1 unit), 276 (when the topic is bi-lingual education); Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies 121, 141; Chinese 105; French 105; Japanese 105; Spanish 110; Performing and Applied Arts 170; or other courses in consultation with advisor.

One of the following options from among statistics offerings: Anthropology 240; Biology 247; Health and Society/Political Science 201; Mathematics 205, 310; both Psychology 161 and 162; Sociology 205 (and 211 recommended but not required). Students intending to pursue graduate study in cognitive science are strongly advised to take the Psychology 161 and 162 sequence. Other courses possible in consultation with advisor.
One capstone course, chosen in consultation with advisor: Cognitive Science 350 (strongly recommended), 380 (honors thesis offered by invitation only), Data Science and Data Analytics 385, Interdisciplinary Studies 310, Philosophy 385 (with permission of instructor and advisor), Psychology 285 (with permission of instructor and advisor. Other courses possible in consultation with advisor.
Honors in cognitive science: Students with a 3.7 GPA or above in courses in the major and a 3.5 GPA or above overall may apply at the end of the junior year to be considered honors students, who will complete a thesis with an appropriate topic.

The Cognitive Science major includes coursework covering philosophy, psychology, consciousness, memory, language, logic, programming, humanity, behavior of systems, and statistics.

[COGS 101] Introduction to Cognitive Science: Examine how emotion has been considered distinct from cognition, as well as the relationship between language and thought.
[COGS 240] Memory and Cognition: This course examines some of the mental processes involved in human behavior. General issues to be covered include the accuracy of memory, problem solving, decision making, and the rationality of thought processes. Specific topics such as selective attention, subliminal perception, neurological bases of memory, and effects of aging will be discussed.
[COGS 241] Minds, Brains, and Bodies: This course looks at those texts that have defined and shaped the field historically, while including texts from other philosophical traditions that have only recently changed how the mind-body problem is understood.
[COGS 350] Capstone Reading Group: The capstone course that provides advanced students in cognitive science an opportunity to engage in a small, seminar-style reading group, introducing advanced topics and topics of more immediate concern.
