Student Surveys
This is where we hear directly from the people we care about most—our students—to understand their experiences so we can celebrate and improve Beloit.
20 Questions Survey / Student Experience Metrics
Beloit College monitors aspects of the student experience that research has shown are correlated with high career and personal outcomes. We’re committed to students having these experiences, monitoring how and if students are having them, and improving the environment that leads to these student experiences.
Each year students are asked to answer 20 Questions about the Student Experiences at Beloit College (“The 20 Questions Survey”), and each year many students graciously take the time to respond.
Students’ answers show us if, and which, students are having these kinds of experiences. The experiences we measure are those we believe are critical either because they are nationally correlated with wellbeing after college, or because they are core to serving our distinctive mission.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
Beloit College participates in the The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) every three years. The survey provides valuable information about students’ engagement with their educational experience at Beloit College such as student-faculty contact, active learning, prompt feedback, time on task, high expectations, cooperation among students and respect for diverse talents and ways of learning.
Reports
The NSSE is a national survey designed to assess the extent to which first-year and senior students engage in a variety of educationally effective activities, perceive institutional priorities and believe their learning and skills have been effected by the institution they attend.
The foundational premise is that students who are actively involved in both academic and out-of-class activities gain more from the college experience than those who are not as involved and that level of involvement is a meaningful measure of institutional quality. According to the NSSE, student engagement is the intersection of:
- the time and energy students devote to educationally sound practices
- the policies and practices institutions use to encourage students to take part in these activities.
NSSE data are useful because they provide ways for the college:
- to measure itself against other similar and aspirant institutions
- to talk about campus culture and expectations and provide a reference for campus “norms”

Student Satisfaction Survey (New this year!)
In spring 2024, Beloit College is surveying all students with the HEDS Student Satisfaction Survey. Students will have a chance
The HEDS Student Satisfaction Survey asks students how satisfied they are with different parts of your experience as a student at Beloit College.
This survey is short, although not as short as the 20 Questions survey (sorry!). It asks about your satisfaction with:
- Academic experiences such as advising and internships
- Course instruction in different subject areas
- Campus services and facilities including food services and student housing
- Aspects of campus life such as student organizations and social life at Beloit College.
Most of the survey is multiple choice, but if you are dissatisfied with any aspect of your experience at Beloit College, you will have the opportunity to explain why in the survey. You can also share things that have been beneficial for you in your time at Beloit College.
The college will use your feedback to improve our programs and services to better meet Beloit College students’ needs. It takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Results to come!
First Destinations
This survey of young alumni helps us understand which students are working, going to school, volunteering or still searching within 6 months of graduation.
Beloit College recognizes that the success of our students is not just about their experiences at the college, but also about their successes following graduation. For that reason, Beloit College surveys our graduates about their “first destinations” after college.
The Beloit College First Destination Survey has been administered to graduates since 2014. The survey was designed to align closely with the standards and protocols approved by the National Association for Colleges & Employers, the professional organization for career development college staff. Career Works leads the survey, with support from the Institutional Research, Assessment, and Planning office and the Advancement office.

Retired Surveys
Because Beloit College respects the time and effort involved in students’ participation in surveys, IRAP carefully considers which surveys to administer. Sometimes we only participate in something once, and other times we change survey instruments. The surveys and assessment instruments listed below are no longer part of Beloit College’s assessment schedule, but results are available by request.
- CIRP Freshman Survey, last administered in Fall 2017
- CIRP Your First College Year and CIRP College Senior Survey, last administered in Spring 2018
- HEDS Sexual Assault and Campus Climate Survey, last administered in Fall 2021
- Measuring Information Service Outcomes (MISO), last administered Spring 2016
- HEDS Teaching Quality Survey, part of the Wabash National Study, administered in 2014-15
- CORE Alcohol and Drug Survey, previously administered by Residential Life to understand students’ health and social behaviors.
