What is Economics?
Economics examines choices. It is the study of how people and organizations allocate limited resources across competing priorities — supply and demand, market behavior, public policy, growth, inequality, international trade and business strategy. Students learn to analyze data, interpret trends, evaluate policy, and think critically about economic outcomes, from individual decisions to global systems. Beloit College’s economics major “emphasizes the economics discipline as the foundation” for business, quantitative, or international tracks.
Why study Economics?
Studying economics gives you a versatile analytical toolkit. You’ll become fluent in quantitative methods and data interpretation, comfortable assessing risk and value, and adept at forming evidence-based conclusions. Whether you plan to work in business, government, nonprofit, research, or consulting, economics equips you to navigate change, craft strategy, and make an impact.
Why study Economics at Beloit College?
At Beloit College, the economics major is embedded within the School of Business, Economics and Entrepreneurship, giving you multidimensional access to business, analytics, and policy. You’ll engage in small classes, early research opportunities, and interdisciplinary connections across mathematics, data analytics and international studies. You can tailor your economics skill set while developing as a thinker who understands both numbers and their meaning.
Students are supported by close mentorship from faculty and career coaches, a network of alumni, and other professionals. Distinctive opportunities — the Upton Forum, which has welcomed four Nobel Memorial Prize winners to campus, Belmark Associates, a student-run consulting firm, and research assistantships with faculty — provide different ways to expand student learning and gain experience.
In addition, Beloit College economics students have access to other professional development resources, such as the Concierge Internship Program, in which students earn credit and a salary through internships with local multi-billion dollar companies, the Know Your Employer series, the Business Networking Summit, “Econ Day,” at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Summer Internship Awards, and Executive-in-Residence mentoring.
